"Kilauea Lighthouse, Kauai" ~ Kilauea Lighthouse on the north shore of Kauai began lighting the way for mariners in 1913. It served as a pivotal navigation aid for ships sailing on the Orient run before it was decommissioned in 1976. The ocean cliffs and open grassy slopes of an extinct volcano also provide breeding grounds for native Hawaiian seabirds and nene, the endangered Hawaiian goose. The lighthouse site is now managed as part of the 203-acre Kilauea National Wildlife Refuge.
