"Shadow Swirls at the Old Exchange" ~ Historic downtown Charleston in South Carolina has one of the highest concentrations of finely crafted iron fences and gates in the world. Some of my favorite wrought ironwork in Charleston is the balusters and railing at the Old Exchange Building (c. 1771). The location on East Bay Street at the end of the east-west corridor of Broad Street sets up this ironwork for some remarkable shadows such as these. Cast against the texture of masonry flooring at the entrance to the Old Exchange, these shadows make for one of my personal favorite compositions featuring ironwork. Also see "Shadows & Stairs" for another great composition of shadows and iron at the same building.
