"Market Hall Cast Iron" ~ Colorful composition of the cast iron stair rails at Market Hall in Charleston, SC. A Palmetto, the South Carolina state tree, appears out of focus in the distance creating a nice bokeh.
"St. Philips Shadows" ~ B&W composition of shadows on the steps of St. Philips Episcopal Church created by the setting sun and a wrought iron gate at the church in historic Charleston, South Carolina. Established in 1680, St. Philip's is the oldest Anglican congregation south of Virginia.
"Shadows & Stairs at the Old Exchange" ~ Historic downtown Charleston in South Carolina has one of the highest concentrations of finely crafted iron fences and gates in the world. Some of my favorite wrought ironwork in Charleston is the balusters and railing at the Old Exchange Building (c. 1771). The location on East Bay Street at the end of the east-west corridor of Broad Street sets up this ironwork for some remarkable shadows such as these. Cast against the shape and texture of stairs in this photo, the shape of the shadows varies as the suns position changes with the seasons. On this particular day, the shadows aligned perfectly with the stair treads to make for one of the most interesting compositions of its type in my portfolio.
