"North Shore Seascape" ~ In the late summer of 2010, I had the amazing opportunity to spend a week on the beautiful Hawaiian Island of Kaua'i. One day along the way to a kayaking tour in Hanalei Bay, my friends and I made a brief stop at the Kilauea Point National Wildlife refuge to check out the historic lighthouse. On the walk back to the car, I noticed this beautiful vista of the north shore of Kaua'i, looking westward toward Princeville. The cloud formations over the mountain with mid-morning lighting was simply perfect. More often than not, it's the shots that I don't plan for that end up being the "keepers."

"Maui Sailboat Cloudscape" ~ In the late summer of 2010, my wife and I had the fortune of staying on West Maui for several days. One evening we ventured out a sailboat cruise to enjoy the sunset along with a few cocktails. I really wasn't planning to take many photographs, but when I noticed how the setting sun was lighting up the spectacular clouds that were virtually exploding above the island of Maui, I instantly knew that I was experiencing a special moment that I needed to capture.

"Snow and Moon, Red Rock Canyon" ~ On a rare snowy day in western Las Vegas, I headed to the nearby Red Rock National Conservation Area to take some photos of the snow-covered mountains and foothills. I noticed where the path of the setting moon was heading, so I looked for a location and composition to capture the moon before it disappeared into the clouds that were rolling over the peaks. The result is one of my personal favorite photos of Red Rock.

"Lismore Castle" ~ Lismore Castle in County Waterford, Ireland, as viewed from the bridge over the River Blackwater. The castle was built in 1185 for Prince John of England while Ireland was under the rule of his father King Henry II. However, the current appearance of the castle is primarily due to significant architectural renovations in the mid-1800s under the watch of the 6th Duke of Devonshire. "The Watch Tower" ~ A small watch tower marks the outside corner of the inner bawn of Aughnanure Castle in County Galway, Ireland. Remnants of the outer wall still stand in the distance, while a small portion of the castle frames the right side of this photograph. Built around 1500, the castle is intact, with its six stories still standing prominently on the banks of the Drimneen River. The watch tower is about 15' (5m) in diameter.

"Magnolia Bridge" ~ After living in Charleston, South Carolina for seven years and visiting the historic Magnolia Plantation & Gardens many times, this is my favorite photo of one of the seven picturesque bridges located on the grounds. The gardens were first opened to the public in the 1870s, but some sections of the gardens are more than three centuries old. I took this photo one beautiful Spring day during the usually brief Azalea blooming season. The best part about looking back at this photo, though, is that I no longer have to swat the mosquitoes and gnats!

"Lifeguard Tower at 12th Street" ~ I've had few beach experiences as enjoyable as my early morning strolls on South Beach in Miami, Florida. The extra-wide soft sand beach bordered by the bright turquoise waters and adorned with colorful, unique lifeguard towers make it unforgettable, not to mention the impeccable Art Deco hotels, vibrant nightlife and diversity of people in the area. My favorite tower shown here is located at the end of 12th Street and is one of a few that still stands after Hurricane Wilma hit South Beach with destructive forces in 2005. All of the towers that were destroyed have since been replaced with new towers that are also vibrant, unique, and awaiting the glance of my camera on an overdue return visit.

"Sailboat Sunset on the Bay" ~ It's hard to top watching the sunset behind the Golden Gate Bridge. Until two sailboats line up on either side of the setting sun, that is! It was a chilly September night as our catamaran tour sailed around Alcatraz and throughout San Francisco Bay. Just minutes after capturing "Through the Sail" and passing under the bridge then back again, the sun was just about to dip into the ocean amidst a peach and purple sky when two sailboats lined up on each side -- one near, one far. Thanks for that, captains.

"Through the Sails" ~ The goal of any photographer visiting an extremely popular travel destination is to try to find a unique perspective of landmarks. This is especially true for the iconic Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. We've all seen dramatic photos of the bridge peaking through dense fog, or with a foreground of waves blurred by a slow shutter. But how many shots have you seen with the bridge framed by a windblown sails? This wasn't a planned shot at all of course, but this composition revealed itself to me just as our catamaran tour was about to pass under the bridge. If this shot wasn't enough, I was also fortunate enough to capture "Sunset Sailboat" just minutes later.
