"Maui Sailboat Cloudscape" ~ In the late summer of 2010, my wife and I had the fortune of staying on West Maui for several days. One evening we ventured out a sailboat cruise to enjoy the sunset along with a few cocktails. I really wasn't planning to take many photographs, but when I noticed how the setting sun was lighting up the spectacular clouds that were virtually exploding above the island of Maui, I instantly knew that I was experiencing a special moment that I needed to capture. "Lismore Castle" ~ Lismore Castle in County Waterford, Ireland, as viewed from the bridge over the River Blackwater. The castle was built in 1185 for Prince John of England while Ireland was under the rule of his father King Henry II. However, the current appearance of the castle is primarily due to significant architectural renovations in the mid-1800s under the watch of the 6th Duke of Devonshire. "North Shore Seascape" ~ In the late summer of 2010, I had the amazing opportunity to spend a week on the beautiful Hawaiian Island of Kaua'i. One day along the way to a kayaking tour in Hanalei Bay, my friends and I made a brief stop at the Kilauea Point National Wildlife refuge to check out the historic lighthouse. On the walk back to the car, I noticed this beautiful vista of the north shore of Kaua'i, looking westward toward Princeville. The cloud formations over the mountain with mid-morning lighting was simply perfect. More often than not, it's the shots that I don't plan for that end up being the "keepers."

"Clogher Cove" ~ Sybil Head and the triple peaks known as the Three Sisters appear beyond the cove at An Drum, as viewed from near Clogher Head. The small white specks on the peninsula are sheep, while the larger specks in the distance are houses.

"Yosemite Valley Cloudscape" ~ View of majestic Yosemite Valley from Inspiration Point near sunset. The view includes El Capitan, Half Dome, and Bridalveil Falls.

This is one of my favorite photos that I've ever taken. I took this photo of the amazing Yosemite Valley in the summer of 2008.

Visiting Yosemite is probably on the 'bucket list' of countless photographers, as it was the home base of the legendary Ansel Adams. It was indeed quite an experience to see in person the beautiful peaks, valleys, and waterfalls that were captured by the skilled eyes and hands of Ansel. His portfolio of Yosemite photos is incredible, especially considering that most of his photos were taken with medium or large format cameras with manual settings. He didn't have the luxury or convenience of automatic digital photography. Ansel couldn't take dozens or even hundreds of images and sort through them later. He could take only two or three exposures of a scene, sometimes only one. Then he would take those negatives into the darkroom and develop them with pure mastery, and with no Photoshop assistance, of course.

Ansel has several famous photos from this same viewpoint within Yosemite National Park. This viewpoint is called "Tunnel View", as it is an overlook of the valley just before a 1.5 mile stretch of Wawona Road passes through a tunnel near Turtleback Dome and Bridalveil Fall. From this viewpoint, many of Yosemite's famous features can be seen. El Capitan is on the left, Half Dome near the center along with North Dome, and of course Bridalveil Fall.

I arrived at Tunnel View about an hour or so before sunset in order to find a good spot to take photos. I moved around to several areas before settling on this viewpoint. I watched the sunlight get warmer and drape the valley in increasingly beautiful light. About 15 seconds before this exposure, I noticed a series of wispy clouds traveling through the sky, rather quickly from my right. I immediately adjusted my camera on the tripod such that I could frame the valley along with these unique clouds flying by. As soon as I got my camera adjusted, the clouds appeared in just the right spot as shown and I was able to snap this single exposure. And seconds later, the wispy, curvy cloud formations were gone. I knew immediately that I had captured something special and unique. It was a very Ansel-esque moment, where the light, the clouds, and the scenery all meshed together for one special moment, just for me and my camera.

“Iron Fence of St. Nicholas” ~ Built in the 1300s, the Collegiate Church of St. Nicholas is an Anglican church located in the heart of Galway. It's the largest medieval parish church in Ireland that has been in continuous use as a place of worship.

"The Watch Tower" ~ A small watch tower marks the outside corner of the inner bawn of Aughnanure Castle in County Galway, Ireland. Remnants of the outer wall still stand in the distance, while a small portion of the castle frames the right side of this photograph. Built around 1500, the castle is intact, with its six stories still standing prominently on the banks of the Drimneen River. The watch tower is about 15' (5m) in diameter.

"Magnolia Bridge" ~ After living in Charleston, South Carolina for seven years and visiting the historic Magnolia Plantation & Gardens many times, this is my favorite photo of one of the seven picturesque bridges located on the grounds. The gardens were first opened to the public in the 1870s, but some sections of the gardens are more than three centuries old. I took this photo one beautiful Spring day during the usually brief Azalea blooming season. The best part about looking back at this photo, though, is that I no longer have to swat the mosquitoes and gnats!

"Koke'e Panoramic" ~ Panoramic photo of the majestic Kalalau Valley from the Pu‘u-o-Kila Lookout in Kauai's Koke'e State Park. Waves crash along the Nāpali Coast 4176 feet below as clouds hover over the Ka‘a‘alahina Ridge.
