PhotoRaconteur > "Snow and Moon, Red Rock Canyon" ~ On a rare snowy day in western Las Vegas, I headed to the nearby Red Rock National Conservation Area to take some photos of the snow-covered mountains and foothills. I noticed where the path of the setting moon was heading, so I looked for a location and composition to capture the moon before it disappeared into the clouds that were rolling over the peaks. The result is one of my personal favorite photos of Red Rock.

PhotoRaconteur > "Power of Vernal Fall" ~ After a moderately strenuous hike up the Mist Trail in Yosemite National Park one Spring day, I was greeted by a waterfall that instantly became my favorite waterfall that I've ever seen in person. And I've seen a lot of waterfalls! Vernal Fall is only 317’ high, so it's not the tallest waterfall I've seen. But, with the landscape that it's set in along with a power that is unmatched in my previous travels, I was immediately in total awe of Vernal Fall. The power of the falls really made an impression on me, so I felt a close-up shot isolating the falls was the best approach. Indeed, this is probably my personal favorite waterfall photo that I've taken.

PhotoRaconteur > "Artist Palette, Death Valley" ~ Colorful mountains within Death Valley National Park. These colors are caused by the oxidation of different metals (red, pink and yellow is from iron salts, green is from decomposing tuff-derived mica, and manganese produces the purple).
Called the Artist Drive Formation, the rock unit provides evidence for one of the Death Valley area's most violently explosive volcanic periods. The Miocene-aged formation is made up of cemented gravel, playa deposits, and much volcanic debris, perhaps 5,000 feet thick. Chemical weathering and hydrothermal alteration are also responsible for the variety of colors displayed at Artist Palette.

PhotoRaconteur > "Yosemite Chapel & Half Dome" ~ View of the historic chapel within Yosemite National Park, framed by the glacially formed Half Dome. I feel this image really shows how well architecture can be meshed in with the surrounding landscape, à la Frank Lloyd Wright.

PhotoRaconteur > "Bridge Mountain Cloudscape" ~ Incredible cloud formations over Bridge Mountain within the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, located along the outskirts of Las Vegas, Nevada.

This was definitely one of those times when patience was rewarded. You just have to choose your spot and wait for the lighting and weather conditions to fall into place.

Red Rock Canyon is a beautiful area just minutes from my home, and I am trying to do my part to help it gain the world’s attention that it deserves.

PhotoRaconteur > "Red Rock Snow, Panoramic No. 4" ~ Snow covered mountain range within Red Rock Canyon, Nevada. Multiple photos have been stitched together to simulate the aspect ratio of panoramic film cameras such as the Linhof Technorama 617s. A larger version can be viewed HERE.

PhotoRaconteur > "Bridalveil Rainbows" ~ Colorful double rainbows at the base of Bridalveil Fall in Yosemite National Park. The 620' tall waterfall was originally named "Pohono" by Native Americans, which translates to "the spirit of the puffing wind." Notice that the colors of the outer rainbow are in reverse order of the main rainbow. The mist at this location is overwhelming in the Spring, requiring rain gear and camera waterproofing. Even then, it requires a paparazzi-like approach to snap photos quickly while turning toward the spray and then away in an attempt to try to keep the lens as dry as possible. The colorful rainbows have been isolated against a monochromatic background in the digital darkroom in order to achieve my desired visual effect.
